Against the backdrop of an America torn by World War Two, cultures and communities clash when a Japanese American islander is accused of murder. This hauntingly lyrical saga – adapted from David Guterson’s acclaimed story of myster, love, and identity – deftly shifts from courtroom to strawberry fields to bloody battlefront, digging for hard truths buried in a forgotten history.

Local Historical Background

The exclusion began on Bainbridge Island on March 30, 1942, when 227 men, women and children – two-thirds of them American citizens – were removed from their homes by U.S. Army soldiers and sent to relocation camps in the California desert. While their departure was mourned by many of their neighbors, not all welcomed their return after the war. The exclusion and its aftermath thus form a crucial part of the Island’s history as well as a reminder of the ongoing need for diversity, justice and vigilant protection of our civil and constitutional rights.

Join the Festivities on Bainbridge!

Fall into the Arts on Bainbridge Island

Bainbridge Island’s passion for the arts stands out in community news and upcoming events. Over the next few months, the Island is hosting a variety of arts-related programs. Each is unique and provides the opportunity for the community to attend or get involved.

Little Shop of Horrors

Starting on Friday, October 10th and going through Sunday, October 26th, Bainbridge Performing Arts presents “Little Shop of Horrors.” Shows are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with 3 p.m. matinees on Sundays. It was nearly a decade ago when the show first debuted on Bainbridge Island in a BPA performance starring this year’s Director Tim Davidson as Seymour. Tickets are available through the BPA website and at the box office.

Bench created by Robert Lucas

Artist Bob Lucas is showing new art at Seattle’s Jeffrey Moose Gallery along with fellow artist Suzanne Haddon from October 16th through January 9th. The show includes paintings, drawing, fused glass, wood sculpture and video. Lucas co-founded the Bainbridge Island co-op gallery “Net Contents, and his work was requested often throughout Kitsap. A reception, featuring Skype appearances by both artists and live music, will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 13th.

On Saturday, October 25th, parents and students have the opportunity to meet with Jara Ruiz-Anchia, the assistant dean of admission at Idyllwild Arts Academy, a residential high school for the arts. The academy is home to arts-loving teenagers from around the world. Every student takes challenging college-prep academic classes in the morning and then devotes the afternoon to arts classes in his or her chosen discipline: visual arts, classical music, jazz, songwriting, theatre, moving pictures, dance, creative writing or fashion design. Those interested in meeting Ruiz-Anchia and learning more about Idyllwild Arts Academy can contact her at 951-659-2171, ext. 2347 or at jranchia@idyllwildarts.org.

On November 8th and 9th, the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra opens their season with a grand performance featuring Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, op. 23 in B-flat minor, Vasily Kalinnikov’s Symphony No. 1 in G-minor and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture. Guest pianist Angelo Rondello will as star in the program. More information about the concert can be found at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org.

Rehearsal for the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra

On Sunday, November 16th, the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra will take over the stage with their free community Fall Concert. The concert features two string orchestras: the Senior Orchestra and the Sinfonietta. Performers, from 7 to 18 years old, are led by BSO/BIYO Music Director Wesley Schulz. This is just the first of three Community Concerts Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra plays annually on Bainbridge Island.

The arts truly are flourishing on Bainbridge Island, and the fall season brings more musical, theater and dance performances, as well as art exhibits. The events listed above are just a few of the many happening here on Bainbridge Island. For more information, or to read more, visit the Bainbridge Island Review.
