Luxury Real Estate Conference 2012

I had the pleasure of recently meeting Linda Cohn, the woman sportscaster, who regularly anchors ESPN’s SportsCenter at the 17th annual Luxury Real Estate Conference in Scottsdale.

As one of the speakers, Her story of determination throughout her life was inspirational. As a teenager, Cohn, a New Yorker, demonstrated talent at ice hockey, making her high school’s boys team.

After graduating from Newfield High School, based in Selden on Long Island, Cohn attended SUNY at Oswego, graduating with a bachelors degree in arts and communications in 1981. She was also the goalie for the women’s ice hockey team at Oswego and was inducted to the Oswego State athletics hall of fame in 2006.

In addition to her trailblazing work as a female sports journalist, Cohn made a name for herself as a prognosticator in the 1997 NCAA basketball tournament. Her bracket that year for ESPN accurately predicted 15th-seeded Coppin State’s shocking victory over South Carolina in the first round, to this day one of the greatest upsets in the tourney’s history.

In 2005, Cohn signed a contract extension with ESPN, which added play-by-play for WNBA telecasts to her duties.

Cohn continues to regularly anchor SportsCenter, which she has been doing since 1992.

Frank Lloyd Wright House is Saved from Demolition, For Now…

A 1952 Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in Phoenix came close to being demolished. (Ross D. Franklin / Associated Press)

The 1952 concrete home was originally designed for Wright’s son and daughter-in-law, David and Gladys Wright. Developer 8081 Meridian bought the home in June for $1.8 million, with plans to divide the two-acre plot and tear down the home.

The developer says it had been issued a valid demolition permit; the city of Phoenix says whoever issued the permit made a mistake.

A deal was signed on Monday between the developer and the city of Phoenix that delays demolition of the home for one month.

When the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy in Chicago found out about the building’s potential destruction, it began the process of getting the home designated a historic landmark.

A search continues for a buyer who will preserve the home.
