Against the backdrop of an America torn by World War Two, cultures and communities clash when a Japanese American islander is accused of murder. This hauntingly lyrical saga – adapted from David Guterson’s acclaimed story of myster, love, and identity – deftly shifts from courtroom to strawberry fields to bloody battlefront, digging for hard truths buried in a forgotten history.

Local Historical Background

The exclusion began on Bainbridge Island on March 30, 1942, when 227 men, women and children – two-thirds of them American citizens – were removed from their homes by U.S. Army soldiers and sent to relocation camps in the California desert. While their departure was mourned by many of their neighbors, not all welcomed their return after the war. The exclusion and its aftermath thus form a crucial part of the Island’s history as well as a reminder of the ongoing need for diversity, justice and vigilant protection of our civil and constitutional rights.

Improving the Highway 305-Suquamish Way Intersection

**Update: According to the Bainbridge Island Review, traffic on the Agate Pass Bridge has been reduced to alternating one-lane traffic from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. for about a week now. However, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the bridge has experienced a reduction of 15 percent in traffic volume during the cleaning. This could be caused by commuters utilizing other ferry terminals or modifying their travel plans. Traffic delays during the work have ranged between five and twenty minutes, with the exception of a spike in traffic on February 12th. With debris cleaning wrapping up, the next step is tackling the rust and inspecting the bridge. The bridge should be opened to both lanes of traffic again on February 28th.**

The Kitsap Sun reports that the “Suquamish Clearwater Casino has agreed to share its parking garage with Kitsap Transit riders, sparing the agency from having to build a new park-and-ride lot and freeing money to improve the Highway 305-Suquamish Way intersection.”

A grant of $2.3 million will be used for the project, which includes removing the park-and-ride lot, building a right-turn lane to Suquamish Way, adding a driveway to the casino near the bridge and installing bicycle-on-bridge lights.
