Incredible Latte Drawings at Hitchcock Deli

Recently, King 5 News visited Bainbridge Island to explore the local coffee scene and meet an Islander who turns making coffee into an art.

From their article:

During any given lunch hour, customers line up inside Hitchcock Deli for the fresh bread and house-cured meats.

It’s a place built on keeping it real.

And that includes the coffee.

“We were really focused on traditional Italian espresso,” said Chef Brendan McGill, who owns the deli. “The concept was getting perfect shots, properly textured milk, and classic free-pour foam.”

But then, barista Kale Lotton came along. He’s a self-described “closet artist” who found his medium in crema and foam.

“If someone grabs it and puts a lid on it right away, it’s totally fine with me. I’m just doing my thing,” Lotton laughed. “And if they love it, that’s even better, you know?”

His lattes demand attention – and not just for how they taste. He can adorn the top with just about any image you can imagine, from sea creatures to an elephant with a wrinkled trunk. Lotton even created a portrait of a co-worker out of steamed milk.

“When people get happy and smile, it makes me smile,” he said.

His creations are so detailed and effortless, it’s hard to believe he’s self-taught.

“I watched some YouTube videos when I first started making coffee and I went wow, I want to do that,” he said.

Lotton honed his skills using an etching technique, with two very simple tools: a spoon and a toothpick.

“For the most part, I’m using the end of the spoon as kind of like a bigger paintbrush, stretching the milk out,” he explained. “For the more fine detail work, I’ll kind of like paint with the toothpick.”

It’s the kind of art that begs to be photographed and shared. Lotton’s lattes have become sensations on Instagram.

“Pretty soon, everyone was coming in for it,” McGill said. “And now he’s got a cult following.”

Bloedel ReserveCelebrate St. Patrick’s Day at one of the greenest places on Bainbridge Island! Andy Navage, Director of Horticulture at Bloedel Reserve, will spend two hours guiding a beautiful informational tour for locals and tourists alike. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about local foilage, this is the tine to do it! Held on St. Patrick’s Day (Tuesday, March 17th), at 10:30am.

Treehouse Cafe, located in Lynwood, is hosting Hunter’s Moon on March 17th, beginning at 4:00pm, for 21+ only. Hunter’s Moon brings together four internationally touring and recording musicians for a once-a-year multi-instrumental trans-Atlantic session. William Pint has been a prominent figure in Seattle Celtic bands since the 1970’s, when he relocated from Milwaukee. A first rate singer, guitar, bouzouki and mandolin player, he now tours the world with Vashon Island (WA) native Felicia Dale, who plays whistle, hurdy gurdy and bodhran. Mike Freeman started life in Manchester (U.K.) and now lives and tours from Kilkenny Ireland. He brings percussion of all kinds to the mix, along with guitar and mandolin. He tours with Alaska-born Tania Opland, a multi instrumentalist who lists guitar, hammered dulcimer, violin, recorders and mandolin among her armoury of instruments, and who possesses a voice of great clarity and depth.

Instrumentally superb, vocally magical, this combination is a Celtic powerhouse – it’s an Irish music party you don’t want to miss. The band has been the mainstay of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at FX McRory’s landmark Pioneer Square pub for many years, but refurbishment at the venue this year means Hunter’s Moon are on the loose!

The month begins with the First Friday Art Walk along Winslow Way, Erickson, Parfitt, and Madison, on December 4th, and is closely followed by Bainbridge Island’s Winter Studio Tour and the 22nd Annual Christmas in the Country, both self-guided tours of historical homes, sixty-four artists and nine art studios on the Island.

The First Friday Art Walk, organized by the Bainbridge Island Downtown Association, is held from 5pm to 8pm. This month, the Bainbridge Public Library will highlight the work of artists Susan Wiersema and Lynnette Sandbloom.

The Bainbridge Island Studio Tour invites you to celebrate the beauty and craftsmanship of local, handmade art. A twice-annual, free, self-guided art show, the Studio Tour has enjoyed great success since 1984. Regional artists jury in to the summer and winter art shows, and sell their work at Island artists’ studios and historic community halls. Meeting the artists and discussing their work and vision in person is sure to be an enchanting experience. By visiting and shopping at the Tour, you are not only buying hand-crafted works of art, you are also supporting the local economy and helping artists to thrive.

Bainbridge Attempts to Rein in VRBOs

Courtesy of Brian Kelly at the Bainbridge Island Review:

City employees at Bainbridge Island have been scouring the web looking for vacation rental spots on the island.

No, they haven’t been looking to find a room for friends or family coming to the island for a visit.

Instead, officials have been investigating whether islanders who are offering their homes as short-term rental properties — on websites such as Airbnb.com and VRBO.com — are licensed to do business on Bainbridge.

Officials have also been looking at home-sharing rentals on the island to see if the property owners have registered with the state Department of Revenue and are paying city B&O taxes, as well as lodging taxes to the city and state.

The Bainbridge city council will get an update of the city’s investigation into vacation rentals at the council meeting Tuesday, June 9.

City Attorney Lisa Marshall, in a June 5 memo to the council, noted that jurisdictions across the country are struggling to make sure home-share property owners are licensed and paying local fees and taxes.

Other cities — including Portland, Oregon; Austin, Texas; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.; and Palm Desert, California — have passed ordinances that regulate short-term rental properties.

In Portland, homeowners who offer one- and two-bedroom rentals in private homes must remit city lodging taxes of 12.5 percent, pay a $180 permit fee every two years, and have their homes inspected every six years. Homeowners must also live on-site at least nine months of the year.

Regulations on home-share rentals vary from city to city.

Marshall also noted that officials in Santa Monica, California adopted an ordinance that prohibited property owners from renting out spaces unless they lived in the housing unit with their guests, and Marshall said that ban would eliminate about 80 percent of the Santa Monica homes listed on home-sharing sites such as Airbnb.

During the search for Bainbridge offerings on Airbnb, city officials found 42 property owners who were offering rentals, and discovered just 17 had business licenses that would allow lodging. Eleven of the 42 were also not registered with the state.

The city’s inventory of Bainbridge home shares is still ongoing.

Once that’s completed, the city attorney is expected to send letters to property owners asking that they obtain a city business license and register with the state.

The city may also expand the authority of the city’s code enforcement officer to enforce regulations on business licenses and taxes.
